CHAPTER 16 - THE COSMIC CHROMOSOME

The celestial music score sprouts forth from the libretto on the music stand and evolves into the universal double helix, blossoming and curling upward. Like a serpentine ladder, it twists through heaven, relentlessly swelling and completely filling the deep place. From everywhere, a great whirling wind brings a constant downpour of swirling music notes. They flitter about before finding their place and fixing themselves on the spiralling score.

Engrossed in his task, Gabriel swoops higher, taking a closer look at the Cosmic Chromosome that billows and unfurls itself in cadence with the pervading psalm. The angel observes the helical structure from all the angles the deep place allows him, continually studying it, thoroughly comparing the musical arrangements with the ever-changing events that take place in the universe. For, if it is the Cosmic Chromosome’s power to create reality, the world as it was, is and will be, likewise it encumbers the angels to uncover anomalies whenever and wherever they appear. To achieve his task, Gabriel is relentlessly vigilant.

Closing his eyes, he calls out the sun’s fiery angel to share his mind with him. Next, the living force of his mind overcomes and passes far beyond the flaming ramparts of the blazing orb, widening the scope of his perceptions, turning his attention to the spirits of the largest galaxies.

Gabriel always enjoys his mission, even when dealing with Satan who perpetually tries to corrupt His laws and thwart His design, and recover his shards ever since he fell and shattered into countless fragments.

Lost and confused, the damned sparks have no memory of the past. Most redeem themselves by suffering incarnation. A few haunt the world, filled with madness and anger.

‘All proceeds well.’

Narrowing his mind probe, he carefully scrutinizes the subatomic strata where he converses with the seraphs of quarks and leptons. After thousands of similar inquests, he finally relaxes.

He has never noticed anything amiss or spotted an aberration - providential laws linked all events at all levels of reality - a stone had yet to fall skyward. Causality ruled and implacably spurred the tale towards its grand finale.

Deeming his duty accomplished, he closes his eyes and the soft wind strokes his body, rising and dying away. For a moment, all the smells of the forest engulf him so that he goes into ecstasies as pleasure courses through him from his heart to the tip of his wings.

Stretching from head to toe, he cranes his neck and offers his beaming face to the sun. Frail wax-stemmed grass blades and damp clover buds stir beneath his feet. Occasional flashes of light through the leafage reveal the air thick with red and yellow butterflies that dance like enchanted confetti.

‘Ao and I spent a lifetime side by side in the world of flesh, angel, and yet we did not recognize each other.’

Gabriel turns his attention to Oa.

‘Bereft of memory, you cannot understand the nature of your pursuit.’

‘Tell me, angel. How will I know how to find her if when embodied we roam about blindly?’

‘Have no fear, loved one. I have sent guides. They will help you in your quest.’
